Karate
is martial art that originated on an island 1600km off of Japan called Okinawa.
At
the time of its origin in the 1900s the Japanese were involved in a war with
China, China had a similar type of martial art called Tang Hand, but Gichin Funakoshi
the founder of Shotokan karate knew this
would not do and changed the name to “way of the empty hand” also known as
karate-do.
Karate-do was trained on the island and on the mainland of Japan, the uniform that they wear is a white uniform including a jacket type shirt and a pair of pants called a Gi (pronounced: Gee) and is still worn to this day.
